Who is the Light of the World Now?

In Uncategorized on July 28, 2013 at 9:03 pm

Here are some highlights I’ve excerpted from a sermon today entitled “Have You Claimed Your Full Birthright?” by Pastor Zac Poonen, given at Abundant Life Christian Fellowship in Mountain View, California:

Who is the Light of the World Now?
“Let me turn to John 9:5. We all know that Jesus Christ is the light of the world, we’ve all proclaimed it. But do you know this verse, where Jesus said ‘I am the light of the world only as long as I am in the world’? He left the world nearly 2,000 years ago so who is the light of the world now? That’s the question. The answer to that is what Jesus told His disciples in Matthew 5:14 “You are the light of the world.” So strictly speaking, if somebody were to ask you ‘Who’s the light of the world?’ You’ve got to say ‘Me. I’m the light of the world.’ Why don’t we say it? Because we want to avoid that responsibility. We want to put it on Jesus; He’s the light of the world. But He said ‘as long as I’m here;’ they can’t see Him. Why did Jesus have to be the light of the world when He was on earth? Because nobody could see the Father. He said ‘If you’ve seen Me you’ve seen the Father. If you haven’t seen Me you haven’t seen the Father.’ When He went away, nobody can see Jesus now, exactly like nobody could see the Father when Jesus was on earth, nobody can see Jesus now. And you and I should be able to say ‘If you have seen me, you have seen a little bit of what Jesus is like.’ You see, the challenge that is ours as Christians–I don’t know whether you realize this–you are the light of the world. You husbands should be able to tell your wives ‘If you’ve seen the way I behave at home you’ve seen a little bit of what Jesus is like.’ I hope so. (Laughter) And now while the wives are clapping their hands that’s what (laughter) the wives should be able to say to their husband: ‘If you’ve seen me you’ve seen a little bit of what Jesus is like.’ Dear brothers, I’m not joking, I’m serious. ‘As the Father sent Me,’ Jesus said, ‘I’m sending you.’ He was sent by the Father to be the light of the world and He’s sending us. We must be gripped by this. We’re not called just to go to heaven when we die, we’re called to be a living witness for Christ on this earth.

“Many unbelievers have turned away, not from the real Jesus Christ but from the false Jesus Christ they have seen in the lives of Christians, who live just like the rest of the world. That is the Christ that many people have turned away from! People say, ‘People have rejected Christ.’ Why have they rejected Christ? Where have they seen Him? They’re supposed to see Him in you and me. They’re supposed to see Him in our homes, the way we live. They’re supposed to see Him in the way we behave in our offices, when they see us in our factories where we work, etc. That’s our calling. And when we think of this tremendous challenge to be the light of the world we say ‘Oh that’s impossible! How in the world can I do it?’ God gives us the resources; otherwise it would be impossible.
