Christians Without the Proper Foundation

In Uncategorized on July 28, 2013 at 9:01 pm

Here are some highlights I’ve excerpted from a sermon today entitled “Have You Claimed Your Full Birthright?” by Pastor Zac Poonen, given at Abundant Life Christian Fellowship in Mountain View, California:

Christians Without the Proper Foundation
“Very often the problem with a building is the foundation is not strong. We have a number of cases in India of buildings falling down because they didn’t lay a proper foundation. I’ve seen that much more in the lives of many Christians; they have problems after they have been believers four or five years because their foundation was not laid right. In the Christian life we begin our life not only by faith in Jesus Christ but by repentance plus faith. And very often that repentance part is not emphasized. Most evangelists, most television preachers, you listen to them they talk about ‘faith, faith, you gotta have faith, faith, faith.’ And people try to believe but they haven’t repented. There’s a faulty foundation. Five years later there’s a crack in the third floor. The problem is not there, the problem is in the foundation.

What Is the Proper Foundation for the Christian Life?
“Look what Jesus said in Luke 24:47. What Jesus told His apostles to preach when they went out into all nations He said that ‘repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in all nations.’ Why isn’t repentance being preached as the condition for the forgiveness of sins? There’s a section of Christians whose theological understanding is repentance is a work. It’s not a work; not at all. We spend our life facing sin and the world and the devil with our back to God and God’s got all these blessings for us, but I can’t get it from Him unless I turn around. And repentance just means turning around; God says ‘Just face Me.’ That’s not a work, that’s just facing Him to see what He wants to give me. That’s all that repentance is.

“And if you repent only half-way you’re going to have problems. The repentance must be 180 degrees from everything that is contrary to the Spirit of Christ. …”
